Finding Your Balance: A Guide to Resetting and Recharging

If you’re a weary designer, product owner, or engineer, bogged down by endless iterations, drained by technical hurdles, or stifled by the sluggish pace of corporate life — halt! Pause for a breath, and reset.
Now’s the moment to unleash the pent-up energy devouring you. It’s time for a reset.

Here are the 5 things I do to reset my headspace.

1. Attending Networking Event

Engaging in networking events not only exposes you to new perspectives and experiences but also fosters connections that can be invaluable in navigating challenges at work. Actively listening to others’ stories and experiences can provide fresh insights and inspiration. Applying these insights to your challenges can lead to innovative solutions and a renewed sense of purpose.

Look for industry-specific networking events in your area or consider virtual networking opportunities through platforms like LinkedIn or Meetup. Books like Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi can offer tips on effective networking strategies. This is one of my favorite books!

2. Seeking New Challenges

If you’re feeling stagnant in your current role, don’t hesitate to seek new opportunities or challenges. Having open conversations with your first assistant or seeking out new projects within your company can help reignite your passion for your work. Alternatively, participating in hackathons or joining team member resource groups can expose you to different aspects of your organization and open doors to new opportunities for growth and development.

Books like Designing Your Life” by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans can provide frameworks for designing a fulfilling career path.

3. Doing a Workspace Revamp

Refreshing your workspace goes beyond just tidying up; it’s about creating an environment that inspires creativity and productivity. Consider adding personal touches, rearranging furniture, or introducing plants to breathe new life into your workspace. A well-organized and visually appealing environment can have a significant impact on your mood and motivation.

Get inspiration for workspace design and organization from websites like Pinterest or HGTV. Books like The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo can offer guidance on decluttering and organizing your workspace for maximum efficiency and creativity.

4. Change Up Your Routine

Introducing variety into your routine can prevent monotony and inject excitement into your daily life. Exploring new workout classes or physical activities not only helps you stay physically healthy but also provides an outlet for stress relief and mental rejuvenation. Whether it’s yoga, pilates, or dance classes like Zumba, finding a physical activity that you enjoy can help you recharge and approach work with renewed vigor. Explore fitness studios or community centers in your area for classes that pique your interest.

I love these meditation cards. I pick one card every morning to start the day in a meaningful intentional manner. I am not good at meditating, so these help me with focusing and guiding me in meditation.

5. Finding a Mentor

Utilize mentorship programs within your organization if available, or seek out mentorship opportunities through professional associations or networking groups.

Books like Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg can provide insights into the importance of mentorship and navigating career challenges.

Building a relationship with a mentor can offer invaluable guidance and support as you navigate challenges in your career. Seek out someone within your organization whose experience and expertise align with your goals and aspirations.

Engage in regular conversations with your mentor, seeking their advice and perspective on various professional matters. Their insights can help you see things from a different perspective and guide you toward personal and professional growth.

Admitting you are a human — being kind to yourself

As a leader, acknowledging one’s humanity can be challenging. Despite the pressure to maintain composure and support one’s team, it’s vital to recognize that leaders, too, experience stress and a range of emotions.

Striving to embody the best version of oneself is a constant endeavor, yet it’s essential to acknowledge that this isn’t achievable every day.

Some days, I arrive fully present and energized, ready to tackle challenges head-on. However, there are also days when I feel drained, showing up at only a fraction of my capacity. It’s natural to experience peaks and valleys in performance and emotional well-being.

Navigating these fluctuations is crucial for personal health and leadership effectiveness. Finding balance involves self-awareness, prioritizing self-care, and knowing when to seek support. Embracing vulnerability and openly communicating with your team about challenges can foster a culture of empathy and trust.

Why is resetting important?

Mental fatigue impairs decision-making abilities. According to research published in the Journal of Management, decision fatigue can lead to poor choices and reduced self-control. Resetting helps alleviate decision fatigue, leading to better decision-making skills.

Creativity thrives in a relaxed state. Research published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology demonstrated that people generate more creative solutions when they are in a positive mood and relaxed state of mind. Resetting allows individuals to recharge and approach tasks with renewed creativity.

Continuous stress negatively impacts performance. A study by the American Psychological Association found that 64% of employees cited work as a significant source of stress. Taking breaks and resetting can alleviate stress, leading to improved mental well-being and productivity.

Permitting yourself to rest is akin to stepping away momentarily and gaining a fresh outlook on your challenges. Upon returning, you’ll find yourself equipped with renewed vigor and a revitalized mindset. This rejuvenation enables you to rediscover your voice, fostering its strength and effectiveness in navigating your work.
